In short: during the beta you may install and use Ewald free of charge for research, teaching and evaluation, including inside a company. Please don't redistribute it, reverse-engineer it or resell it. It comes without warranty. Your data and results are yours.
Ownership
Ewald, including its code, prompts, scientific methods as implemented, interface, documentation and name, is © 2026 Rajdeep Boral, all rights reserved, and is protected by copyright law (including the Indian Copyright Act, 1957) and international treaties. The Software is licensed, not sold.
1. Licence
Rajdeep Boral ("we") grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the Ewald desktop application ("the Software") on computers you control, for the duration of the beta, for research, teaching and internal evaluation. If you accept this agreement for an organisation, the licence covers the members of your group or team who you invite.
2. Restrictions
Except where the law expressly allows it, you may not:
- sublicense, rent or sell the Software, host its installers anywhere other than the official download page (share a link to ewald.vercel.app instead), or share licence keys outside your group;
- reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble the Software, or remove its notices;
- use the Software to build a competing product, or offer it to others as a hosted service;
- circumvent the Software's privacy protections, encryption, plugin approval, budget limits or future licensing checks.
3. Third-party components
The Software includes open-source components (such as pymatgen, ASE, spglib, CHGNet, PyTorch, LangGraph, FastAPI, Tauri, React, 3Dmol.js and Plotly.js) that remain under their own licences, listed with their licence texts in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES, which ships with the Software. Nothing in this agreement limits your rights under those licences; for example, ASE (GNU LGPL) is shipped as source files that you may replace. The Software does not include VASP or its pseudopotentials; you need your own licence to run VASP. Your use of an AI provider is governed by that provider's terms.
4. Your data
Everything you create or import with the Software (structures, inputs, outputs, text and results) belongs to you. The Software stores it on your computer and does not send it to us; it contains no telemetry. Conversations are stored encrypted with a key kept in your operating system's credential store. Data leaves your computer only when you ask for it: conversation text goes to the AI provider you configure, search terms go to structure databases you switch on, and files go to computing clusters you configure. 5. Plugins, connectors and other applications
Plugins you write for the Software are yours. Plugins written by others are their authors' responsibility; they run on your computer with your permissions once you enable them, so enable only plugins you trust. Connectors reach third-party services (for example the Materials Project or the Crystallography Open Database) whose own terms and data licences apply to what you retrieve. If you let another AI application use the Software's tools through the Model Context Protocol, that application's terms apply to it.
6. Beta status and updates
The Software is pre-release. It may contain bugs, and we may change or discontinue features. We may release updates; continued use after an update means the version of this agreement shipped with it applies.
7. Feedback
If you send us suggestions or bug reports, you allow us to use them freely to improve the Software.
8. No warranty
The Software is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy of scientific results and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows. You are responsible for verifying results before relying on them, submitting jobs or publishing.
9. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data, computing time, AI provider charges, profits or research results. Our total liability under this agreement during the free beta is limited to USD 100.
10. Termination
This licence ends when the beta ends, when you stop using the Software, or if you breach this agreement. When it ends, stop using and uninstall the Software. Your data remains yours and stays on your computer. The ownership section and sections 3, 4 and 7–11 survive termination.
11. Governing law
This agreement is governed by the laws of India, and the courts of Kolkata, West Bengal have jurisdiction, unless the law of your country gives you the right to bring a claim where you live.
